On the preparatory day of the Symposium on Education Pathways to the Netherlands that will be held on 7-8 November 2024, Justice & Peace explored together with universities and organisations working on inclusive education, the complexities of collaborating with educational institutions during the stakeholder round table.

Since the education pathway has not been established yet in the Netherlands, together we focused on the changing political landscape in the Netherlands and its influence on the policy of educational institutions regarding international students that has brought new challenges for the possibilities for this educational pathway and student sponsorship. The universities shared that while the process varies per institution, it generally falls under internationalization efforts. Discussions also focused on the 24-month support system to ensure long-term residency and the responsibilities that this entails.

Key concerns include responsibility for incomplete studies, pressure on international students and job guarantees for a durable stay. The role of student associations and networks is crucial and was highlighted as potential support systems. Housing responsibilities were clarified, noting that educational institutions or local governments are responsible depending on visa type.

Justice & Peace continues to mobilize and strengthen capacities by working collaboratively with partners on different levels towards an active and practical network in order to establish an education pathway to the Netherlands.
